Formal Berber Necklace
Antique, delicate and completely original Berber or Amazigh (“ámazir”) necklace. This kind of rich pectoral adornment is an integral part of the traditional dress and jewelry of (among others) the Ayt Ouraine Berbers (Moyen-Atlas, South of the Rif Mountains) at festive occasions.
Dating from around 1920, this necklace is all original and has not been cleaned, retaining its wonderful patina of time. The necklace does not open but is simply strung around the neck. Brightly orange colored, artificially hardened paste beads form the cabochons on both sides of the nine oval shaped hand-crafted beads. None are missing. The chain and beads are of a tribal alloy with some silver.
